A few decades ago, few denominations had women preachers. Today all liberal Protestant denominations have women preachers. Is this biblical? The argument goes, “The Bible verses against women preaching over men were only meant for that day and age, not for today. Women were uneducated back then and today they are educated, so it is fine for a woman to preach over men.“
But take a careful look at 1 Timothy chapter 2. The Apostle Paul’s argument against women preachers has nothing to do with education. The ground of his argument, the “for” of 1 Timothy 2::23, is that men and women were created differently. And that truth remains from age to age. Jesus could have chosen six men and six women to be his apostles, but he chose 12 men to lead his Church.
Women can teach children (2 Timothy 1:5) and women can teach women (Titus 2:4), but the preacher over a church should be a male.
Below is a sermon from a United Methodist woman preacher who is offended that people think she shouldn’t preach. Not too many decades after liberal denominations voted to ordain women, they voted to ordain practicing homosexuals. Years ago when I still was a pastor in the liberal Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. a woman pastor said at a convention, “We don’t believe what the Bible says anymore about women preachers, why should we still believe what it says about homosexuality?“ She kind of had a point. If we can get around the Bible verses about women preachers, we can also get around what the Bible says about homosexuality. I said at the convention “Not all of us believe women should preach over men” and I felt like a minority of one.
Today denominations that ordain women and homosexuals are hugely shrinking in membership. You reap what you so. I am glad that today I am a member of a Lutheran denomination which only has male pastors.
